Taking Control Of Diabetes

Much has been made in recent years about the effects that a healthy diet, or lack thereof, can have on our health. It is now thought that diabetes is caused in large part by the foods we eat and the weight that we allow ourselves to put on.  There is good news, however.  This serious health concern can be managed, or perhaps even reversed, by selecting a healthier way of eating.

Monitoring your blood sugar is an intricate part of managing diabetes.  This is best done by eating natural, wholesome foods that don't contain excessive amounts of sugar.  It is also important for people suffering from diabetes to eat at regular intervals to prevent blood sugar levels from getting too far out of whack.  At times, medications are required to keep levels within acceptable ranges.

However, generally when you switch from a diet high in calories, fat, and sugar in order to maintain healthier blood sugar levels, you also will see some extra pounds come off. Studies have indicated that once your weight reaches a healthy range diabetes no longer becomes as much of a concern, and it is possible to live a life free having to worry about blood sugar in some instances.  Healthy eating requires a balance of vegetables, lean protein, low-fat diary, and whole-grain fibers.  Ingredients such as sugar and white flour should generally be avoided as they carry large amounts of glucose that can interfere with both weight loss and diabetes management efforts.
