Everyone knows that obesity is a problem in America today; the health risks of being overweight are as bad as those associated with smoking or drinking to excess, and more and more of the population is tipping the scales. Unfortunately, the health craze to combat this epidemic seems to be focusing itself on frenetic exercise and fad diets, often leading to as many or more health problems. A healthy, moderate diet coupled with an active lifestyle is the key toward better fitness for everyone.
A healthy diet is at least half of the equation to promoting good health. Too many people are on a cycle of benging on unhealthy foods and then trying to mitigate the damage by starving themselves. Fad diets rarely lead to long-term weight loss, and many are downright unhealthy. Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and cutting back on sugar and fats, is a much better long-term solution to weight loss and health.
Much like the cyclic nature of diets, many people spend most of their time lazing around and expect that short bursts of activity will make up the difference. This leads to exhaustion and a general inability to stick with an exercise plan; by making moderate exercise a regular part of your day you can stick with the program and will find it much easier to maintain your weight and fitness. Setting realistic and regular goals and meeting them is a much better path than attempting to counteract years of neglect in a short period of time.
