With obesity becoming a growing epidemic, even among children, in the United States many people are turning to fad diets as a means of shedding the extra pounds. However, many doctors and nutritionists report that dieting is not necessarily the answer that we are looking for. The key to achieving and maintaining weight loss is to focus on behavioral changes that focus on healthier ways of eating over the long term. Diets that require that you avoid certain food groups are certain to be short-lived as they are incredibly difficult to maintain over the course of several years.
Our bodies need vitamins and nutrients from all of the food groups. Rather than labeling certain foods as "good" or "bad," the idea is to find foods that are high in nutritional value rather than simply adding plenty of extra calories. You will want to eat lean meats, whole grains, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. You will want to make certain that you are getting your recommended daily allowance of all the food groups in order to be certain that you are getting proper nutrition.
Weight loss comes from increasing your level of physical activity and paying attention to portion sizes. We typically eat more food than our bodies need, which can result in extra pounds. Rather than focusing on cleaning your plate, experts suggest measuring out your portions or eating slowly until you feel full. You might be surprised how quickly you actually fill up and the difference it can make around your middle.
