Healthy Eating Can Prevent Diabeties

We all seem to live busy lives. Many of us find ourselves eating from fast food chains that contain foods which are high in carbohydrates and sugars. As the result of poor food choices and lack of exercise, more and more people are being diagnosed with Diabetes.

Diabetes is a disorder that affects the way a person's body uses food for energy. As a general rule, the sugar a person takes in is digested and broken down to a simple sugar, known as glucose. The glucose then travels through your blood where it waits to enter cells to be used as fuel.

Insulin which is produced by the pancreas helps move the glucose into cells. A healthy pancreas adjusts the amount of insulin based on the level of glucose. However, if you have diabetes, this process breaks down, and blood sugar levels become too high.

The proper diet is critical to diabetes treatment. Spacing meals throughout the day, instead of eating heavy meals once or twice a day, can help a person avoid extremely high or low blood glucose levels.

Losing weight and reducing one's intake of saturated fats, cholesterol, and sugars, can help lower one's sugar level. Good foods to eat are foods that contain fiber, such as fruits and vegetables as well as whole-grain breads and cereals. Try to eat baked chicken and fish as opposed to fried. Foods that should be avoided are the ones that are high in sugars and carbohydrates such pastas, breads, and desserts. Instead, try brown rice as opposed to rich and creamy pastas.

A diabetes diet should help a person achieve the ideal weight, maintain normal blood glucose levels, and limit foods that contribute to heart disease. Through proper dieting and exercise, a person with diabetes can live a healthy life.
