How Your Body Reacts to a High Protein Diet

The high-protein diet has gained in popularity through the years. There are variations of the high-protein diet, but basically it restricts the intake of high-carbohydrate, high-fiber plant foods. While many experience rapid weight loss, it is difficult to maintain it as a long-term lifestyle change and often the weight returns. The majority of nutritionists and the American Heart Association don't recommend high protein diets because of the potential health risks faced by eating more higher-fat foods.

Some of the reactions that your body may have to a high protein diet include constipation, a loss of body fluids, kidney stones, liver disorders, higher blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Constipation is common because so few calories are consumed through fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods. These foods also assist is keeping your blood pressure lowered. By not eating carbohydrates, your body begins to break down fat cells and produce a higher level of uric acid and urea in your blood. These are toxic chemical compounds and your body pumps water into your kidneys and urinary tract to flush them out. It is very common for dieters to lose too many body fluids because of this. Kidney stones are common and depletion of essential minerals, such as calcium, can lead to osteoporosis. The high fat content of this diet increases the cholesterol level in many people. High cholesterol is a huge factor in heart attack and stroke. A high-protein diet can be healthy, when combined with fruits, vegetables and grain products.
