Diabetes Prevention Tips

If you are at risk for type 2 Diabetes studies show you can delay or prevent the onset of this disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight. This simple step can be accomplished with 30 minutes of walking a day and by eating healthier.

Making the right food choices is not hard. Adding more fruits and vegetables into your diet, and decreasing your portion size is a start. Vegetables should be non-starchy such as spinach, broccoli, cabbage and green beans. Whole grain instead of processed grain, whole-wheat pasta, and brown rice fit these. Dried beans and lentils added to your meals with lean meats, and fish is also good choices. You should cut out the high calorie snack food and replace them with non-fat yogurt and non-fat cheese.  Choose water more than soda, and any other sugar-sweetened drinks.

By adding exercise into your day you will begin to feel and look better. You do not have to join a gym to get the benefits you need, it is about choices. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park a little farther out in the parking lot, and rake the leaves instead of mowing them over. Take walks that add up to thirty minutes a day. The added time of slowing down to enjoy the world could also be of some benefit.

Always have regular check ups with your doctor. A little change in your diet and exercise could be all you need to help control the on set of Diabetes.
